WORD: MEDIAN

Meaning: the middle piece of data - 1/2 of the data is less than this, and 1/2 of the data is greater than this.

Example sentence: The median height of our 4th grade class is 54 inches. That means half of the students are shorter than 54 inches, and the other half is taller than 54 inches.

Type of word: noun (person, place or thing)

Origin: Latin, meaning middle



WORD: OUTLIER

Meaning: the data that is very far "out", or away, from the clumps of data

Example sentence: The outlier on our line plot of 4th grade heights was 43 inches. It was 5 inches away from the next closest piece of data.
